The body of a slain Alabama sheriff’s deputy was escorted through North Escambia on Thursday afternoon on his way back to Wilcox County, Alabama.

Wilcox County Deputy Chief and retired Deputy Madison “Skip” Nicholson, who worked as a police officer / process server, responded to domestic unrest in Yellow Bluff, Alabama, one town less of 200 inhabitants Wednesday evening. They were greeted with gunfire and both were shot dead.

Nicholson was airlifted to Sacré-Coeur Hospital in Pensacola where he succumbed to his injuries. The chief assistant was injured and taken to an Alabama hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was also killed, according to AL.com.

Officers from the Pensacola Police Department and assistants from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office watched over the fallen deputy throughout the night from Wednesday to Thursday.

On Thursday afternoon, Nicholson’s body was escorted north from Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola through Escambia County. After crossing North Escambia on Highway 97, the motorcade was met in Atmore by law enforcement in Alabama. A giant American flag fluttered from an Atmore Fire Department truck just across the state border.

“My hometown of Wilcox tragically lost retired Sheriff’s Deputy Madison” Skip “Nicholson who was shot and killed in the line of duty,” Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said. “We are all too often reminded of the grave sacrifice our men and women in blue face every day to protect our communities. The Alabama law enforcement agency is actively investigating this tragic situation. My prayers go out to his family and colleagues.
