Cardinal, fans return to Stanford Stadium

The Stanford Cardinal football team finally returned to their home stadium on Saturday after seven consecutive road games. The Cardinal’s only home game in 2020 in the middle of a shortened season had no fans in attendance. Saturday’s game against UCLA was the first time Cardinal fans could fill Stanford Stadium since November 30, 2019.

The Stanford student section attended in full force with a record number of students attending a football game. More than 7,500 students were present, accompanied by the return of the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band and a new Stanford Tree mascot. The total number of spectators reported for the match stood at 47,236 fans on Saturday.

On the court, the Cardinal lost 35-24 to the visiting No.24 UCLA Bruins. Stanford fell into a 14-0 hole, then hit back to tie the game 21-21 in the fourth quarter. The Bruins scored two back-to-back touchdowns in the fourth quarter to spoil the Cardinal’s return. Stanford has lost four straight home games, dating back to the last 41-31 victory over Arizona in October 2019.
