African-American artist Kara Walker’s first exhibition to be held in Australia opens at the National Gallery of Australia this Saturday, August 13, 2022.

Project 2: Kara Walker draws on two decades of practice by one of North America’s most influential contemporary artists. The exhibition explores the complex narratives of race, gender and sexuality that run through Walker’s signature black and white images.

Rising to fame in the mid-1990s, Walker is internationally recognized for her striking and ironically humorous graphic depictions of the racist imagery, systems of power, and harrowing stories that have accompanied colonization as it has emerged in the United States since the 1990s. age of slavery.

On display for the first time at Kamberri/Canberra will be the two major new acquisitions of the gallery – Testimony: story of a black woman charged with good intentions, 2004, the artist’s first film and a monumental drawing in mixed media, Your World is About to Change, 2019. These new acquisitions form Kara Walker’s centerpiece and are presented alongside a selection of works curated by the artist exclusively for the National Gallery.

Sally Foster, Senior Curator, National Gallery Prints and Drawings, says: “Kara Walker challenges viewers to critically examine the creation of the North American belief in freedom and liberation, the perpetuation of racist stereotypes and sexism in popular culture and global systems of oppression and exploitation. caused by slavery.

Walker’s work shows us that through the colonial enterprises, we are all intertwined in a vast and complex bond that stretches from Europe and Britain to Africa and the United States, and finally to Australia.

“With a practice that addresses the legacy of transatlantic slavery and America’s current issues around racial inequality, Walker brings another perspective to a global conversation that resonates deeply with communities here in Australia,” Foster said.

Project 2: Kara Walker is in theaters from August 13, 2022 to February 4, 2023.

Kara Walker is part of the Contemporary Project Series and is a Know My Name project. The Contemporary Projects Series was created in 2021 to support the work of living artists and demonstrate the National Gallery’s commitment to art today.

This exhibition is part of the National Gallery of Australia’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
