The candidates for this year’s Zurich Portrait Awards have been announced by the National Gallery of Ireland.

Twenty-six artists have been shortlisted for the Zurich Portrait Prize; 20 artists, aged 4 to 18, have been shortlisted for the Zurich Young Portrait Prize. All made it to the final round from hundreds of entries, in a variety of media, from across the country.

The winner of the Zurich Portrait Prize will receive a cash prize of €15,000 plus a commission of €5,000 to create a work for the national portrait collection. Two additional prizes of €1,500 will be awarded to the most popular works among the pre-selected. The judges are artist Diana Copperwhite, Anna O’Sullivan from the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny and artist Nick Miller.

As part of the Zurich Young Portrait Prize, five winners – one from each age category plus an overall winner – will receive art supplies as well as a cash prize; all shortlisted artists will have their work professionally framed/prepared. The judges are Janet McLean from the National Gallery of Ireland, comic book illustrator Nick Roche and artist Una Sealy.

Gallery Director Sean Rainbird says he is “delighted that this exhibition gives many new and old artists the opportunity to show their work at the National Gallery of Ireland.” According to Neil Freshwater, managing director of Zurich Insurance, the awards “bring together the remarkable range of talents of Irish portrait painters of all ages”. “We are delighted to once again see such a selection of works in this year’s shortlists.”

Shortlisted works for both competitions will be on display at the National Gallery of Ireland, Merrion Square in Dublin, from Saturday 26 November to 2 April next year. The exhibition will then be on display at the Regional Cultural Center in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, between 3 June and 2 September 2023.
