For just under an hour Thursday night, the graduating seniors of the Cal State Bakersfield women’s soccer team seemed headed for a fairy tale ending on Senior Night.

In her first start of the season, winner Kaylee Covert assisted on fellow senior Rhyan Acosta’s game-winning goal shortly before half-time, then netted a long-range shot just after the break to extend the lead. Roadrunners at 2. -0 over UC San Diego.

It was Covert’s first career goal in his 47th appearance.

But after Dome Rodriguez was denied a potential third goal just 42 seconds later, the Tritons offense came to life. Midfielder Courtney Hilliard edged Anela Nigito on a breakaway and beat Hollee Hercik with a low, left shot in the 57th minute. Then, after three saves from Hercik to hold the 2-1 lead, she was beaten on a ball into the box by Kennedy Carter, who bounced a shot off the top of the bar for a last minute equaliser.
