The Trojans, who reached the Division 2 semi-finals last year, came away with an 8-0 victory over the Southgate side, which is a co-op between Southgate Anderson, Flat Rock and Monroe High.
For Trenton (1-0), Matt Krueger led the way with four goals while teammate Hayden Oboza scored two goals and had an assist. Additionally, Nick Fields scored once and assisted on three goals and Zach Anderson was credited with three assists in the win.
Southgate Unified (0-1), who has just 11 players on the roster, kept the mighty Trojans off the board in the first half.
But less than 30 seconds into the second period, Fields put the visitors on the board, assisted by Aaron Brow.
Oboza found the back of the net five minutes into the period and Krueger followed a minute later with his first of the night and made it 3-0. Fields and Brow assisted on Oboza’s goal and Oboza assisted on Krueger’s goal.
Soon after, Trenton scored three times in 91 seconds to take a 6-0 lead.
John Medvich started the scoring shoot-off with 7:15 remaining, assisted by Jacob Wiseman and Micah Kneiding. To follow up, Oboza and Krueger each scored for the second time in the game. Oboza was assisted by Fields and Ethan Sivi and Krueger was assisted by Anderson and Zach Shaul.
Krueger also scored Troy’s next two goals.
He lit the lamp inside the dying minute of the second period to win a hat trick and that brought his team to a late-game goal earlier. With about 10 minutes to go in the final period, Krueger did just that, as he capped the eight-goal win for Trenton. Anderson assisted on both goals while Sivi assisted on the first and Fields was credited with one on the last goal.
Trojans goaltender Noah Miklos stopped all 13 shots he faced en route to a season opener shutout.
